Isle of Man switches to Ticketer

1 September 2014

Ticketer has won the tender to supply Isle of Man Transport with fixed and hand-held electronic ticketing machines (ETMs) for its unique fleet of buses, trams and steam trains.

Isle of Man Transport runs a fleet of 65 buses, plus six steam trains and one diesel train that operate in the summer between the capital Douglas and Port Erin in the south. The company also runs several electric trams along the scenic east coast between Douglas and Ramsey (including the two oldest in the world, which first entered service in 1893) and six mountain trams on the Snaefell Mountain Railway.

Ticketer is supplying 70 ETMs fitted to vehicles, as well as fourteen units for the main stations and the two central information points in the Welcome Centre in Douglas and the airport.

Isle of Man Transport is also amongst the first customers to order Ticketer’s new hand-held units, which have all the same functionality as the fixed units. The 24 hand-held units will be used by inspectors, conductors and guards on buses, trains and trams, and for queue busting.

The Ticketer ETMs generate a significant amount of journey, passenger and location information, which Isle of Man Transport will use for ongoing operational needs, network design and service provisions to help them deliver a better experience for passengers.

Alf Lloyd, Head of Operations at Isle of Man Transport, said: “We are looking forward to working in partnership with Ticketer in developing new technologies to improve the travel experience of our customers. We will address the wide array of customer needs by providing ticket solutions for ITSO contactless Smart cards, ease of payment for tickets, including on-line top-up, improving punctuality in reducing dwell time at bus stops and developing on-vehicle bus, tram and rail Telematics to improve our operations. We look forward to working with Ticketer to help achieve this.”

Ticketer is providing training for the company’s bus drivers, inspectors, conductors and guards.
